SEC Orders $3.4 Billion in Penalties in Fiscal 2013

The Securities and Exchange Commission said its enforcement division opened 13% more investigations in the latest fiscal year and ordered violators of SEC rules to pay a total of $3.4 billion. The SEC said these monetary sanctions were 10% higher than the penalties the prior year and 22% more than in 2011, when the SEC filed the most actions in its history.
